During the past year, the Dutch-born and now Washington DC-based producer Martyn underwent a metamorphosis - one that began with a medical emergency and culminated in a personal-musical transformation.

After jumping just short of death after a heart attack in the summer of 2017, Martyn returned to the studio. This began a process that allowed him to re-locate the elements of his artistic creation: sampling, unpredictability, melancholy, sci-fi, polyrhythmics, planes, ecstasy, Detroit, interlocking percussion and bass. The trigger for working on new, own music was M'Boom , a 1979 album by Max Roach and his percussion ensemble of the same name.

Martyn:This was the first album I heard after I came out of the hospital. For this project, Roach worked with some top percussionists and drummers, who then changed instruments for each piece. Listening to this album was a surreal experience, the first music I consciously heard after recovering. There was so much room in the music, something I had never noticed before - almost 3D, but the most notable was the emptiness between the musicians. "

Over the next eight months, Martyn Voids wrote, his first album for Ostgut Ton and in some ways decidedly different from his previous solo albums: no features or collaborations, with nine pieces reduced to the musical essence. Moreover, it is a highly personal approach to new ways within genres that Berghain / Panorama Bar-Resident has long shaped and driven even with its innovative productions: Post-Dubstep and UK Garage.

Voids is roughly subdivided into this musical base, recontextualized with elements from the Nyabinghi rhythm, Drum 'n' Bass and Gqom, resulting in growling, bass-heavy hybrids. This development already hinted at GL Outtakes - the revisions and edits of his seminal debut album, released in November 2017Great Lengths (2009). In contrast, Voids is also an attempt to process personal trauma and the loss of companions, such as the untimely death of his longtime friend and producer Marcus Intalex aka Trevino, to whom the track "Manchester" is also dedicated.

The sound of Voids is big, uncompromising and unpolished. Music as a therapy, consumed by the soothing elements of past sounds, but far removed from any retrospective.

Rather, Martyn is well-versed in electronic futurism, as is his numerous solo productions on Ostgut Ton, Dolly, Hyperdub, Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, Warp, and his own 3024 label show. The latter runs Martyn together with visual artist Jeroen Erosie, who is also responsible for the visual identity and artwork of this new album. On Voids, Martyn's futuristic, sonic qualities are now merging into something darker, more biographical, free of expectations.
