This 2xLP collection delves into the rich tapestry of South African jazz and jazz-funk, spanning tracks from 1969 to 2003. ​ The compilation's title, "Chakalaka Jazz," draws inspiration from a traditional South African relish made from tomatoes, onions, and chili. This relish is known for its spicy and diverse flavors, mirroring the eclectic and hybrid nature of the tracks selected. Featured artists include Victor Ntoni & Clarence Wilson, Gibson Kente, The Soweto Boys, The Drive, The Cliffs featuring Winston Ngozi, The Four Sounds, Jazz Ministers, The Tailfeathers, Clarke Cassidy, Zim Ngqawana, and Johnny Dyani. Celebrating 15 years of the nominal "post-dubstep" label, this limited 12" EP hears four exclusive, unreleased tracks from an upcoming label-definer compilation, the third in a series. Born from the basement of Plastic People, the pressure has remained continuously on Eglo to keep the same foment of bass musical innovation that the club nurtured alive. Plastic People is a routinised object of nostalgia, and it is often deemed the last proper place for innovation in bass music before austerity Britain militated against it. Zed Bias's remix of Chunky's 'Dancing On Tables' with Metrodome - and the deep, bruk-inspired track, 'Minerals,' from Liverpool's rising star Sticky Dub - both prove this assessment totally wrong. Genius thrives. On the flip, we've also house legend Giles Smith (formerly of Secretsundaze) delivering fresh material, as well as label boss Alexander Nut making his official debut with the lo-fi electro house track 'Arcade Fun Pt. 1.' In full gatefold LP form comes the latest Brazilian boogie compilation by Horse Meat Disco, selected selectors of the best rarities in the disco genre. Curated mostly by founding member Luke Howard and with added consultations from crewmates James Hillard, Severino Panzetta and Jim Stanton, a lifetime of frolicking among samba troupes, carnival processions and yearly Rio visitations went into the choices you hear here, consummating one man's intuitive taste for a sound whose appeal stretches far wider than its nation of origin. Mr Bongo invited Howard to their Brighton HQ for an extended on-site selection, proving its off-the-cuff expertise: early electronica experiments from Ze Carlos blend voluminously with Jorge Ben pennings and mouth-watering Luiza Maura 7" cullings, proving a hand-picking that is at once eclectic and unifying. Swedish label Borft has been digging in its archives again to assemble another volume of what it sees as its most classic cuts. And we don't disagree with these, which are taken from releases that originally landed between 1998 and 1999. Egglady's- 'Prinsessan Och Agget 1' is well-swung and deftly dubbed out with lovely analogue drum sounds cutting through. Nikolas Rowland's 'Headspin' is another smooth one with molten chords and a firm low-end drive. 'Puffy Nipples' from Kord is a wonky number with an unhinged charm and stomping groove that will stand out in any set while Crinan closes with the classy and raw house, dub and tech fusion that is 'Suit 61'. June Jazzin has long been a torchbearer for South Africa’s broken deep house movement, crafting music that merges jazz-funk, spiritual energy, and syncopated club grooves. His broken rework of Boogie With Me stands out — dusty yet agile, anchored by a fluid bassline and smoky lounge-style keys. The rest of the record is thoughtfully curated. Lukamusic sets the tone with Dear Women, a track shaped by brushed percussion and heartfelt harmonies. Vencer Cafe follows with Xxx, a minimal, sultry piece soaked in delay and irregular swing. Closing things out, El Payo offers Sunbright — the most classic cut here, led by warm organ lines and a dimly lit atmosphere, yet full of depth.
