So far, there's been two wicked releases on the label, both of them by The Chalice Crew, with the concept being that it's a shared anonymous alias, meaning that anyone whose music is signed to the label has their music released under The Chalice Crew alias, making it open to being absolutely anyone.. Purity was written in 2021 and was one of a few tracks I had completed, but remained unreleased. In 2022 I played a show for Dissonance in Bristol, and consequently played Purity, to which George (Artificial Red) contacted me the following day about this particular track I played, and I told him it was a piece called Purity. He really liked it and asked if he could remix it, and I agreed. Not long after he sent over the remix which I liked, but at that point I wasn't too sure where we could release them, so they remained unreleased for a time. In the latter part of 2023 we both played a show together and he played the remix, which caught my attention as I hadn't heard it in a while, and that was my first time hearing it on bigger speakers and I thought it sounded great! The genesis of the tracks on the Defiance LP [HOROEX38] came directly in the aftermath of the Space Echo EP by ASC for Samurai Red Seal. At the time, James made remixes of some of the tracks from this EP in an updated style for use on his last European tour. Two of these remixes make up the Defiance: Prelude release. Their next EP is Suspension of Belief, and it arrives on Objekt's label, Kapsela. pianist/composer Aidan Shepherd and drummer Tim Carnegie - were invited to Mykonos as part of a collaboration between Maera Music and 22a, which allowed the band to spend a few days writing and recording some new music. 'Theme' is a 1999 techno classic from Mion aka Edit Select that was originally released on Music Man. 26 years on, it still sounds future and chimes with the deep tech sound of now, so has been remastered and offered up alongside new remixes from Vil, Earwax and Deniro. The original is a textured, loose and chunky techno stomper with fuzzy pads and imperfect edges. Vil's version has wispy synths and static electricity fizzing around a deep mid-tempo groove and cavernous sub bass. There's not much we can tell you about the identities of the "trusty producers" behind the Old Boys Vinyl Sessions project, other than that they have been making and releasing music under various aliases since the pre-MP3 days. It's easy to see why they want to avoid publicity, as what's an offer is a tasty house rework of a string-laden Blue Nile number from back in 1984. Scottish producer Milton Jackson returns to Freerange with four club-rooted collaborations that bridge Glasgow's punch with Detroit's finesse. It's a new release that brings Brian Kage on co-production and mastering, HazMat Live on synth duties, and Jon Dixon supplying characteristically sharp keys i and the results are as warm and robust as you'd expect. 'Fire Emoji' opens with a stripped-down, pressure-cooked club tool: all booming low-end, echoing vocal wisps and crisp arrangement. ‘Spaces‘ is Horikawa’s new album, following from 2013’s ‘Vapor‘ released via London-based label First Word. This time the album is released on Borrowed Scenery, a new label setup by Horikawa and close collaborator Daisuke Tanabe to enable them to operate free of constraints. The album features 11 songs that combine field recordings and sound design with a range of stylistic touch points: the fluid intricacies of hip-hop, the precise efficacy of IDM, the euphoric physicality of dance music, the humanity of acoustic instrumentation. Each song blends a primary sound source with a certain style, with titles often hinting at the origins of the sounds – “Moldy Vinyl,” “Vietnam,” “Fluid,” “Swashers,” “Nubia” – or the mood the music evokes. What ties it all together is Horikawa’ s deeply personal understanding of what constitutes music, an understanding shorn from the commercial and stylistic structures of music as a commodity.
