Moore: Over the past few years, concert patrons have stopped the musician Carlos Niño after gigs to ask two simple questions: “Are you a shaman?” “I hear the medicine in your music, can I come to your next ceremony?” The queries are fair enough: Looking at Niño, a tall man with a wild beard and kind eyes, one would think he’s from some faraway time and could maybe cast spells. Originally released on Deviate in 1995, this 13 minute techno trip caused mayhem on dancefloors across the world. Peter's love for early Detroit techno in can be heard in the beautiful Res*lute. Warm strings, deep basslines and a repetitive synth theme provide for a stunning track which was used by Carl Craig in his selection for the influential DJ Kicks series. Articles include a project linking Mancunian and Palestinian artists, an interview with AFRODEUTSCHE, the ethics of sampling and a reggae orchestra led by a visually impaired Jamaican. Long reads include a look at a Ghanaian festival, a thinkpiece on solidarity and protest sounds in South Asia and the diaspora and the role of social media platforms in framing beauty standards in electronic music. A review of our panel at WOMEX in October 2024 is featured too. Astonishingly, 18 years has now passed since Gilles Aiken - probably more celebrated these days for his work under the alternate Desert Sky alias - first offered up off-kilter tech-house tracks as Edward. Last year, he impressed with a wonderfully deep and unctuous EP on deep house imprint Smallville; here, he makes his bow on another must-check label, Kalahari Oyster Cult. In keeping with the imprint's love of all things trippy and otherworldly, opener 'Tentacle' sees him wrap chiming lead lines, psychedelic synth motifs, weird noises and layers of percussion to a chunky, locked-in house groove. Aiken then goes off piste via a skewed, druggy and at times dreamy tech-house remix of Trybet's 'Moodsetter'. Arguably best of all though is impossible-to-pigeonhole flip-side 'Dr Octo', which is immersive, unsettling, tactile and eccentric in equal measure. Learn More

The American female vocal trio First Choice released their rendition of 'Love and Happiness' in 1973. The track is a cover of Al Green's original released just a year earlier in 1972, but First Choice's version was perhaps helped along the way by a peak case of nominative determinism: for us, theirs is the first choice. Featured on their debut album, Armed and Extremely Dangerous, it stood out on the Philly soul girl gang's record as one of the records most propitious to sampling by house and techno musicians, such as Todd Terry and Jungle Brothers. But this time, the legacy of this preceptive soulful-house interplay is honoured by a newly reissued remix by the mysterious but titanic Chicago producer Ron Hardy, whose inclusion on the record is the real star here. Hardy's signature reel-to-reel fuzzes and presence-bled hues effect recollections of a pre-DAW production setup, and the resonances of dub (woodblocks, four-tone hooks, burly basslines) nest the original Al Green vocal nicely. Khadim is a stunning reconfiguration of the Ndagga Rhythm Force sound. The instrumentation is radically pared down. The guitar is gone; the concatenation of sabars; the drum-kit. Each of the four tracks hones in on just one or two drummers; otherwise the sole recorded element is the singing; everything else is programmed. Synths are dialogically locked into the drumming. Tellingly, Ernestus has reached for his beloved Prophet-5, a signature go-to since Basic Channel days, thirty years ago. Texturally, the sound is more dubwise; prickling with effects. There is a new spaciousness, announced at the start by the ambient sounds of Dakar street-life. At the microphone, Mbene Diatta Seck revels in this new openness: mbalax diva, she feelingly turns each of the four songs into a discrete dramatic episode, using different sets of rhetorical techniques. The music throughout is taut, grooving, complex, like before; but more volatile, intuitive and reaching, with turbulent emotional and spiritual expressivity. Learn More

There's not much we can tell you about the identities of the "trusty producers" behind the Old Boys Vinyl Sessions project, other than that they have been making and releasing music under various aliases since the pre-MP3 days. It's easy to see why they want to avoid publicity, as what's an offer is a tasty house rework of a string-laden Blue Nile number from back in 1984. The opening 'Cloudburst Vox' wraps elements of the band's sultry, simmering original track (strings, vocals, pianos) and tech-house electronics around a locked-in house groove, while the accompanying 'Cloudburst Dub' strips out the vocals while retaining the gorgeous arrangements and druggy 21st century sounds. The extended flipside 'Torrent Vox' ramps up the strings and other picturesque sounds, inserting a simply stunning extended breakdown for good measure. Learn More

The legendary Reading-based jungle label, Basement Records, has released two new remixes of Top Buzz’s 1993 bass-driven darkside anthem, made all the more meaningful following the tragic passing of TB (Jason Kaye) in 1993. The Swankout Legacy is the more distinctly junglist of the two, initially transforming the original’s relentless four-to-the-floor rhythm into a swirling Amen storm, layering stretched-out vocals and apocalyptic horns, before reintroducing the pounding 4/4 beat just as you thought it might have disappeared. The Swankout Legacy Vocal Mix, however, adds a hefty dose of reggae to the heavy, dancefloor-dominating hardcore beats, with such intense results that you might think the United Nations should get involved. The official sales note and PR are fairly enigmatic and mysterious out of respect for the wishes of the artists, but it's fairly widely shared public knowledge that NRSB-11 is primarily a collaboration between Gerald Donald (Drexciya, Dooplereffekt, Arpanet, Japanese Telecom and many more) and DJ Stingray 313 (Urban Tribe, official tour DJ for Drexciya and acclaimed solo artist). Originally released as a limited edition in 2013 on Belgium's WéMè label, their sole album Commodified quickly went out-of-print and has been much sought after ever since - it's currently on 1,783 Discogs wants lists. For the initial reissue, we've produced a special transparent 2 x LP edition with the original album artwork screenprinted onto a PVC outer-sleeve, and two clear vinyl discs housed in transparent poly inner bags. This edition is limited to 2,000 copies worldwide and we don't expect them to stick around for long. There is also a standard CD edition containing 3 bonus tracks. French techno alchemist Vardae is the latest artist to feature on German experimental drum & bass label Samurai Music. Vardae has dabbled with 85/170bpm speeds before, most notably on his excellent 'The Kaipos' EP. This time we get a full EP's worth of deep techno-influenced drum & bass, a sound that is familiar to anyone following recent trends in the deeper scenes of techno: acid lines, forest drums, mystic vocals, etc. The opener 'The Light Motion' is a halftime groover with fluttering percussion propelling it forward. The second 'Chaeming Your Soul' has a more recognisable drum & bass rhythm underneath, bringing to mind Overlook and UVB-76's back catalogue with powerful acid washes over the top. 'Voices Of Depossesion' has a conventional four-to-the-floor beat but at a blistering BPM and 'Flaming As A Cloud' ends with an excellent drum & synth-ony. Encore has been remastered from the original tapes and features 11 compositions by Arthur Verocai who was joined by the legendary Azymuth, Ivan Lins and a nine-piece string section. The album was a long-awaited follow-up to his 1972 debut so bridges 35 years and bottles up Brazilian influences with American soul and cinematic experimentation. Initially overlooked amongst his wider canon, Verocai's debut gained cult status thanks to Far Out Recordings' Joe Davis who rediscovered it in the late 80s. In 2004, producer Dave Brinkworth brought Verocai back to the studio to reignite his musical brilliance. ‘Spaces‘ is Horikawa’s new album, following from 2013’s ‘Vapor‘ released via London-based label First Word. This time the album is released on Borrowed Scenery, a new label setup by Horikawa and close collaborator Daisuke Tanabe to enable them to operate free of constraints. The album features 11 songs that combine field recordings and sound design with a range of stylistic touch points: the fluid intricacies of hip-hop, the precise efficacy of IDM, the euphoric physicality of dance music, the humanity of acoustic instrumentation.
