Leron Carson may not be the most widely recognized producer in the Midwest, but his career has deep roots. Encore has been remastered from the original tapes and features 11 compositions by Arthur Verocai who was joined by the legendary Azymuth, Ivan Lins and a nine-piece string section. The album was a long-awaited follow-up to his 1972 debut so bridges 35 years and bottles up Brazilian influences with American soul and cinematic experimentation. Initially overlooked amongst his wider canon, Verocai's debut gained cult status thanks to Far Out Recordings' Joe Davis who rediscovered it in the late 80s. In 2004, producer Dave Brinkworth brought Verocai back to the studio to reignite his musical brilliance. This 33rd such outing comes from Per Hammar who offers a trio of irresistible grooves. 'Everybody hz' kicks off with rubbery drums and bass intertwining with each other while wonky synths up top add some tripped-out feels. A Varhat adds a little extra bounce and urgency to this silky late-night hypnotiser and then it's back to Hammar for 'The Danish URL'. The American female vocal trio First Choice released their rendition of 'Love and Happiness' in 1973. The track is a cover of Al Green's original released just a year earlier in 1972, but First Choice's version was perhaps helped along the way by a peak case of nominative determinism: for us, theirs is the first choice. Featured on their debut album, Armed and Extremely Dangerous, it stood out on the Philly soul girl gang's record as one of the records most propitious to sampling by house and techno musicians, such as Todd Terry and Jungle Brothers. But this time, the legacy of this preceptive soulful-house interplay is honoured by a newly reissued remix by the mysterious but titanic Chicago producer Ron Hardy, whose inclusion on the record is the real star here. Wild post-d&b from Cardiff music producer Quartz, whose music speaks for itself: in Elliot Garvey, we find an artist rightly hesitant to involve himself in the gaudy blare of online releasing. What is lost in the way of covetous imitativeness, which goes all too commonly with the territory of attempting to maintain an online presence, is made up for with a raw, unversed and entirely original sound, which builds on the tempos and harshnesses of drum & bass while otherwise upending its banalities. 'Russian Roulette' and 'Lucid' hardly care to qualify as d&b tracks proper, more than they do to simply compel the raver to shake uncontrollably, with their gatling percs and no-man's textures. 'Do It', meanwhile, contrasts the A-side's intuit-iators with an intelligent chopper-upper, working rattling and languid voices around a mercenary mix.
