While nowhere near his most celebrated work, 'I Need You' is undoubtedly one of sadly departed San Francisco disco star Sylvester's most potent dancefloor workouts - a typically driving mood-enhancing cover that transformed a gospel song into a soaring, surging, tops-off hymn to sexual desire. This reissue pairs the Harvey Fuqua-produced original 12" version (1980) with what appears to be a previously unreleased re-edit by Chicago house originator Ron Hardy. The latter's take is more rhythmically sturdy and lightly percussive, with vocal and full instrumental sections (often drenched in effects) sitting side by side with extended drum workouts. It's a fine alternative take of a disco record that should be in everyone's record collection. Learn More

This record is a collection of tracks that I have completed over the past year since moving out of London. Side one is inspired by the mid-nineties jungle sound when the music was becoming more stripped back and influenced by hip-hop. Side two expresses my appreciation of the darkside hardcore sound. Growing up in the midlands I was exposed to this era of hardcore and jungle by hearing tapes from promotions such as Amnesia House and Quest. The Eclipse club in Coventry (later the Edge) played a major part in the proliferation of this style which continues to influence many contemporary artists within the rave scene. The samples used in these tracks reflect issues relevant to our current times whilst paying respect to the original architects of the hardcore and jungle sound. Learn More

The genesis of the tracks on the Defiance LP [HOROEX38] came directly in the aftermath of the Space Echo EP by ASC for Samurai Red Seal. At the time, James made remixes of some of the tracks from this EP in an updated style for use on his last European tour. Two of these remixes make up the Defiance: Prelude release. Sometimes, the perfect track just comes out of nowhere, and that's exactly how Mamacita's 'Tu Amor' came to be. A Chilean rendition of Jamie Principle & Frankie Knuckles' 'Your Love,' the track was originally released in 2012 and gained attention after being played by the Idjut Boys in their sets. DJ Steve KIW caught wind of it and passed it along to Mr Bongo, where it quickly became a favorite. During a performance in Barcelona, Luke Una dropped the track and immediately felt the connection. The song's raw, DIY energy, combined with its unique arrangement, made it a natural fit for E Soul Cultura, leading to its first vinyl release. Created by Chilean DJ Mamacita (Carolina Vallejos) and producer Persona RS (Sebastian Roman) using lo-fi equipment, the track captures the spirit of early Chicago house. It gained a following within Chile’s underground scene but didn’t get much exposure outside Latin America and the US. For this release, Luke Una and Luke Solomon have re-edited the track, extending it and highlighting its quirky synths while maintaining that cosmic, offbeat vibe. Khadim is a stunning reconfiguration of the Ndagga Rhythm Force sound. The instrumentation is radically pared down. The guitar is gone; the concatenation of sabars; the drum-kit. Each of the four tracks hones in on just one or two drummers; otherwise the sole recorded element is the singing; everything else is programmed. Synths are dialogically locked into the drumming. Tellingly, Ernestus has reached for his beloved Prophet-5, a signature go-to since Basic Channel days, thirty years ago. Texturally, the sound is more dubwise; prickling with effects. There is a new spaciousness, announced at the start by the ambient sounds of Dakar street-life. At the microphone, Mbene Diatta Seck revels in this new openness: mbalax diva, she feelingly turns each of the four songs into a discrete dramatic episode, using different sets of rhetorical techniques. The music throughout is taut, grooving, complex, like before; but more volatile, intuitive and reaching, with turbulent emotional and spiritual expressivity. Learn More

Moore: Over the past few years, concert patrons have stopped the musician Carlos Niño after gigs to ask two simple questions: “Are you a shaman?” “I hear the medicine in your music, can I come to your next ceremony?” The queries are fair enough: Looking at Niño, a tall man with a wild beard and kind eyes, one would think he’s from some faraway time and could maybe cast spells.
