Altered Circuits' next release comes by way of Bologna-to-Berlin transplant Jacopo Latini. On the Motherboard EP he combines stubby drums and sultry, efficient basslines with richly hued synth work. Once the cuts get going, a tapestry of melody reveals itself: gated leads are accompanied by burbling arpeggios, momentous chord progressions and bright pads that crawl in and out. The patches often incline to the bright and dreamy but are deployed with restraint; in the same vein, concealed and aloof vocal samples get sprinkled in. Reflecting the Bristol artist's preference for heavyset bass and hydrop(h)onic textures, we were first turned on to their sound like heliotropic plants to red supergiants, whence in 2022 the 'Soft Bloom' EP offered our ears an ironic floral hardness. Since then, the artist has been hard at work on another five tracker of irreplicable sound, with 'Tumble Turn' and 'There's Nothing Happening Between Us' offering the best of the EP's tresillos and stereo-ecstatic percussions, which seem to paradoxically texturally vary themselves both much and not so much. While he's nowhere near as high-profile as he once was, Curtin is still capable of delivering dancefloor magic - as The 4 Lights, his first album in 15 years, emphatically proves. Space Drum Meditation is back with a reissue of Four Tusks, a 12-track odyssey of dreaded sonics and trepidatious treks through augmented wildernesses. Their debut album and seventh reissue on the eponymous label, the duo of Eddie Ness and Liem were once fixtures of the house musical landscape at large, yet only with SDM did they turn their hands to demurer experimental soundscapes, informed by the "tribal" gloom and etherics of an electro-auxed rainforest. Throughout Four Tusks, we hear the sleeker, pantherine side of their catalogue, with ritualistic drumming heard well-melded into many a grim, cowled and rattling texture, all glued by the faint but here still oppressive sound of rain, not to mention vapour steaming off the megaphylls. Encore has been remastered from the original tapes and features 11 compositions by Arthur Verocai who was joined by the legendary Azymuth, Ivan Lins and a nine-piece string section. The album was a long-awaited follow-up to his 1972 debut so bridges 35 years and bottles up Brazilian influences with American soul and cinematic experimentation. Initially overlooked amongst his wider canon, Verocai's debut gained cult status thanks to Far Out Recordings' Joe Davis who rediscovered it in the late 80s. In 2004, producer Dave Brinkworth brought Verocai back to the studio to reignite his musical brilliance. Deep don Pablo Bolivar is back to explore the murky waters that exist way below the surface on Seven Villas, this time with Celestial Sphere alongside for the trip. 'Context' opens with swirling celestial pads, traintrack-like grooves and plenty of vinyl crackle while 'Second' is a super slow motion and utterly sparse world with the most wispy pad and occasional hit sketching out the vibe and rhythm. 'Good Deal' twinkles with a little more light and hope in the melodies that break the surface as dusty drums and dub bass cocoon you from below. It's a new release that brings Brian Kage on co-production and mastering, HazMat Live on synth duties, and Jon Dixon supplying characteristically sharp keys i and the results are as warm and robust as you'd expect. 'Fire Emoji' opens with a stripped-down, pressure-cooked club tool: all booming low-end, echoing vocal wisps and crisp arrangement. 'The Sunsetters' is the emotional peak, built around a fluid synth solo from HazMat Live and buoyed by plush pads and 909 accents. French techno alchemist Vardae is the latest artist to feature on German experimental drum & bass label Samurai Music. Vardae has dabbled with 85/170bpm speeds before, most notably on his excellent 'The Kaipos' EP. This time we get a full EP's worth of deep techno-influenced drum & bass, a sound that is familiar to anyone following recent trends in the deeper scenes of techno: acid lines, forest drums, mystic vocals, etc. The opener 'The Light Motion' is a halftime groover with fluttering percussion propelling it forward. The second 'Chaeming Your Soul' has a more recognisable drum & bass rhythm underneath, bringing to mind Overlook and UVB-76's back catalogue with powerful acid washes over the top. 'Voices Of Depossesion' has a conventional four-to-the-floor beat but at a blistering BPM and 'Flaming As A Cloud' ends with an excellent drum & synth-ony. Like his Windy City compatriots Mark Grusane and Rahan, Cratebug specialises in high-grade, razor-and-tape style re-edits subtly re-framed for 21st century dancefloors. The Chicagoan has released many fine collections of reworks over the last decade and this two-tracker is another high-grade treat. Up first is 'Fiyah', a heavyweight tease-and-release loop jam built around low-slung disco grooves, layered vocal samples and subtle effects trickery. While he appears not to have add any beats, its' Soundstream-esque construction makes it perfectly suited to house dancefloors. Over on the flip, he gives his take on one of the most beloved disco classics of all time: Diana Ross's incredible 'Love Hangover'. At the time, James made remixes of some of the tracks from this EP in an updated style for use on his last European tour. Two of these remixes make up the Defiance: Prelude release. Astonishingly, 18 years has now passed since Gilles Aiken - probably more celebrated these days for his work under the alternate Desert Sky alias - first offered up off-kilter tech-house tracks as Edward. Last year, he impressed with a wonderfully deep and unctuous EP on deep house imprint Smallville; here, he makes his bow on another must-check label, Kalahari Oyster Cult. In keeping with the imprint's love of all things trippy and otherworldly, opener 'Tentacle' sees him wrap chiming lead lines, psychedelic synth motifs, weird noises and layers of percussion to a chunky, locked-in house groove. Aiken then goes off piste via a skewed, druggy and at times dreamy tech-house remix of Trybet's 'Moodsetter'.
