Forms is the debut release from Naturalisten. Behind this name is Rado, one of the founders of the Unknown Species collective. They've put together some great underground parties in London through the years, giving space to new talents and sounds, and blissfully ignoring trends and fads. Rado's colourful and imaginative take on deep techno shines through all the six tracks here. Fans of the sounds we often hear on the likes of Delsin, Nous'Klaer Audio, Spazio Disponibile, Bitta, Animalia, are likely to find plenty to love here. Starting with the subtlety of "Release The Tension"; passing through the swampy "Against The Tide", the bleepy minimal drum'n'bass of "Woodpecker", the acid deepness of "Aves Acid"; and landing on the early-morning atmospheres of "Canopy Dreams", which we find very much reminiscent of some exquisite James Holden moments from a time long gone. The final touch to an already beautiful body of work is added by Forest Drive West with his remix of the opening track "Release The Tension". There's not much we can tell you about the identities of the "trusty producers" behind the Old Boys Vinyl Sessions project, other than that they have been making and releasing music under various aliases since the pre-MP3 days. It's easy to see why they want to avoid publicity, as what's an offer is a tasty house rework of a string-laden Blue Nile number from back in 1984. The opening 'Cloudburst Vox' wraps elements of the band's sultry, simmering original track (strings, vocals, pianos) and tech-house electronics around a locked-in house groove, while the accompanying 'Cloudburst Dub' strips out the vocals while retaining the gorgeous arrangements and druggy 21st century sounds. Sometimes, the perfect track just comes out of nowhere, and that's exactly how Mamacita's 'Tu Amor' came to be. A Chilean rendition of Jamie Principle & Frankie Knuckles' 'Your Love,' the track was originally released in 2012 and gained attention after being played by the Idjut Boys in their sets. DJ Steve KIW caught wind of it and passed it along to Mr Bongo, where it quickly became a favorite. During a performance in Barcelona, Luke Una dropped the track and immediately felt the connection. The song's raw, DIY energy, combined with its unique arrangement, made it a natural fit for E Soul Cultura, leading to its first vinyl release. Created by Chilean DJ Mamacita (Carolina Vallejos) and producer Persona RS (Sebastian Roman) using lo-fi equipment, the track captures the spirit of early Chicago house. It gained a following within Chile’s underground scene but didn’t get much exposure outside Latin America and the US. For this release, Luke Una and Luke Solomon have re-edited the track, extending it and highlighting its quirky synths while maintaining that cosmic, offbeat vibe. Purity was written in 2021 and was one of a few tracks I had completed, but remained unreleased. In 2022 I played a show for Dissonance in Bristol, and consequently played Purity, to which George (Artificial Red) contacted me the following day about this particular track I played, and I told him it was a piece called Purity. He really liked it and asked if he could remix it, and I agreed. Not long after he sent over the remix which I liked, but at that point I wasn't too sure where we could release them, so they remained unreleased for a time. In the latter part of 2023 we both played a show together and he played the remix, which caught my attention as I hadn't heard it in a while, and that was my first time hearing it on bigger speakers and I thought it sounded great! After all, the best among us eat bangers for breakfast! The A-siders rattle out like inexhaustible mags, as we hunt down bullet-holed cardboard cutouts of mortal enemies, spied in the reticle. It's only until after such an opening bloodbath that we find a moment to catch our breaths and put on a 'Clean Shirt', where rejuvenative acids resound between roomier beat. Long reads include a look at a Ghanaian festival, a thinkpiece on solidarity and protest sounds in South Asia and the diaspora and the role of social media platforms in framing beauty standards in electronic music. A review of our panel at WOMEX in October 2024 is featured too.
