CARLOS NIÑO & FRIENDS - (I'm just) Chillin', on Fire (LP)
£24.98Liner Notes by Marcus J. Moore: Over the past few years, concert patrons have stopped the musician Carlos Niño after gigs to ask two simple questions: “Are you a shaman?” “I hear the medicine in your music, can I come to your next ceremony?” The queries are fair enough: Looking at Niño, a tall man with a wild beard and kind eyes, one would think he’s from some faraway time and could maybe cast spells. Once you get to know him, you find that he’s just an incredibly sweet guy with a laid-back demeanor, and that he isn’t some guru claiming to have an all-access pass to the otherworld. Learn More -

SURGEON - Shell Wave (2x LP)
£32.99Since at least 2024, by our reckoning, shells have been having something of a moment in electronic music. Why, exactly, is anyone’s guess. Maybe it’s the unsettling feel of nautilus palps or the spiraling segments of ancient fossils—forms that seem to intuit the mechanized pulse of techno. Birmingham linchpin Surgeon (Anthony Child) taps into this fascination, transforming chirping sonic opercula into filter-fed 4/4 Borg-like entities. Despite the thematic suggestion, Child keeps his setup minimal: “For me, it's an interesting experience returning to old techniques again after 30 years,” he says. The result is a stripped-back, live-style set—eight tracks recorded in single takes. Only "Dying" breaks from the beat-driven mold, offering a morose, mantra-like soundscape. Learn More -

DJ DEEON - D.B.G II PROJECT
£15.98Chicago has many legendary figures, but one who stands proud among many is DJ Deeon, a low-end legend and widely considered to be the true Godfather of ghetto house. He dropped this EP originally back in 2013, and it is one of many that soon became classic, which is why it gets this remix from Chiwax. 'Happy' perfectly summarises Deeon's sound - booming and heavyweight kick and drums, smart samples looped perfectly and big hooks. 'The Truth' speeds things up and brings that Ghetto sleaze, and 'R U Sure' is a more minimal sound that still bangs like a heavyweight. 'Gigabytes' is full of caustic synths and blending melodies that bring sheer chaos to the club. Learn More -

FREEGROOVE - PASSION PROJECTS VOL 1
£11.48This record is a collection of tracks that I have completed over the past year since moving out of London. Side one is inspired by the mid-nineties jungle sound when the music was becoming more stripped back and influenced by hip-hop. Side two expresses my appreciation of the darkside hardcore sound. Growing up in the midlands I was exposed to this era of hardcore and jungle by hearing tapes from promotions such as Amnesia House and Quest. The Eclipse club in Coventry (later the Edge) played a major part in the proliferation of this style which continues to influence many contemporary artists within the rave scene. The samples used in these tracks reflect issues relevant to our current times whilst paying respect to the original architects of the hardcore and jungle sound. Learn More -
GEMINI - In Neutral (2x LP)
£28.49Gemini's In Neutral has long been considered a classic of the second wave of Chicago deep house. It was well-loved by aficionados upon its original release in 1997, though it didn’t achieve the broader recognition it deserved at the time. Since then, it’s been hard to find on vinyl—unless you're willing to pay the inflated prices online. That's why this licensed reissue from ChiWax is a welcome treat. In Neutral is still widely regarded as Gemini's finest work, blending pounding, hypnotic Detroit techno-inspired deep house tracks with some deeper, jazz-infused downtempo moments (such as "Ahi"). The album also includes a stellar piece of early Chicago "boompty" with the standout track "?" Learn More -

VARIOUS - Borft Dance Classics Vol 4
£17.99Swedish label Borft has been digging in its archives again to assemble another volume of what it sees as its most classic cuts. And we don't disagree with these, which are taken from releases that originally landed between 1998 and 1999. Egglady's- 'Prinsessan Och Agget 1' is well-swung and deftly dubbed out with lovely analogue drum sounds cutting through. Nikolas Rowland's 'Headspin' is another smooth one with molten chords and a firm low-end drive. 'Puffy Nipples' from Kord is a wonky number with an unhinged charm and stomping groove that will stand out in any set while Crinan closes with the classy and raw house, dub and tech fusion that is 'Suit 61'. Shifting from the precision of PT.1, this release coils low-end pressure and restless sequences around percussive frameworks that flicker between tension and release. Each track feels alive-mechanically structured yet pulsing with organic energy unfolding in real time. The balance of restraint and propulsion gives the EP a kinetic, suspenseful edge which means that PT.2 doesn't just follow its predecessor; it refracts it, bending the narrative into new shapes. EDWARD / TRYBET - Deep Sea Villain EP
£17.99Astonishingly, 18 years has now passed since Gilles Aiken - probably more celebrated these days for his work under the alternate Desert Sky alias - first offered up off-kilter tech-house tracks as Edward. Last year, he impressed with a wonderfully deep and unctuous EP on deep house imprint Smallville; here, he makes his bow on another must-check label, Kalahari Oyster Cult. In keeping with the imprint's love of all things trippy and otherworldly, opener 'Tentacle' sees him wrap chiming lead lines, psychedelic synth motifs, weird noises and layers of percussion to a chunky, locked-in house groove. Aiken then goes off piste via a skewed, druggy and at times dreamy tech-house remix of Trybet's 'Moodsetter'. Arguably best of all though is impossible-to-pigeonhole flip-side 'Dr Octo', which is immersive, unsettling, tactile and eccentric in equal measure. Learn More -

DAN CURTIN - The 4 Lights LP
£26.48Dan Curtin has been serving up genuinely far-sighted techno productions since 1992. While he's nowhere near as high-profile as he once was, Curtin is still capable of delivering dancefloor magic - as The 4 Lights, his first album in 15 years, emphatically proves. Those familiar with Curtin's spacey, futuristic and frequently funky take on techno and electro will know what to expect: think infectious, classic-sounding Motor City rhythms overlaid with funky basslines, warming chords, intergalactic-sounding lead lines and a healthy dose of electronic futurism. Curtin predictably hits the spot throughout, with highlights including future techno anthem 'What of Lazarus', the melodic and jazzy headiness of 'Trust Blind' and the sub-heavy downtempo shuffle of 'Transformations'. If that's not enough to seal the deal, this limited-edition version comes pressed to striking clear and black marbled vinyl. Learn More -
LOST TRAX - The Watcher EP
£15.98Frustrated Funk is one of many labels from the Netherlands that delivers house and techno, all while staying rooted in the foundations of Chicago and Detroit. Their releases consistently bring a timeless quality, and this latest offering from Lost Trax is no exception. '23' strikes a balance between dreamy and gritty, yet undeniably groovy. 'And Or' leans into a quirky, acid-driven vibe, while 'It's All Good' provides a smooth, downbeat synth break. 'Grib' is a lo-fi, experimental track with a touch of Omar S's signature style, and 'The Watcher' wraps things up with deep, dusty brilliance. Learn More -

THE OTHER PEOPLE PLACE - Lifestyles Of The Laptop Café EP
£17.99One of the two The Other People Place releases (the Warp full length and this 12). Drexciyan involvement in this classic release is obvious. One of the deepest and intense tracks with such a warm positive vibe. Flipside contains a track by Mystic Tribe. (not very mystical of course for those who know the history of Detroit techno. Unique track from a unique project... and there are not many projects with Tribe in its name. Their release on Retroactive is one Detroit techno collector items). One of those records that get you through the day. Learn More -

NYE - Garage Planet EP
£10.99Welcome to Large Hall, a fresh new label launching with a journey to Garage Planet, brought to you by NYE. Though a new artist on our radar, NYE clearly has the talent to back up the hype with this EP. "Jack In" opens with a gritty, ghetto-inspired vibe, driven by a dark bassline, while "Nightwerk" carries a similarly menacing feel, despite its laid-back groove. The raw echoes of early Chicago house resonate through "Local 707," highlighted by a standout lead synth motif. "Output Signal" keeps the vibe deep and dirty, featuring stripped-back drums and percussion. Finally, "Passer" ventures into brighter, more melodic territory, while still maintaining an eerie, heady energy. Learn More -

FEEL FREE HI FI - Voyageur / Underground (7")
£12.49It says a lot about the interconnectedness of the global dubwise underground that it took downtime with Bristolian Neek in Portland to spur the link between ZamZam and Feel Free Hi Fi out of the Minneapolis Twin Cities. Once he put us on to them we were hooked- not only by their brilliant music but by their rigorously DIY approach and aesthetic. Heavily inspired by the more esoteric angles of early digi-era JA dancehall and UK dub (Shaka, Disciples, Mixman and Gussie P being some touchstones) the duo create a sound both reverential and unique, steeped in the traditions but striking out hard left into idiosyncratic territory all their own. Releasing all of their works up to this point on their own fantastic Digital Sting label, we’re excited to showcase them on ZamZam. Learn More -

MARK ERNESTUS' NDAGGA RHYTHM FORCE - KHADIM LP
£21.49Khadim is a stunning reconfiguration of the Ndagga Rhythm Force sound. The instrumentation is radically pared down. The guitar is gone; the concatenation of sabars; the drum-kit. Each of the four tracks hones in on just one or two drummers; otherwise the sole recorded element is the singing; everything else is programmed. Synths are dialogically locked into the drumming. Tellingly, Ernestus has reached for his beloved Prophet-5, a signature go-to since Basic Channel days, thirty years ago. Texturally, the sound is more dubwise; prickling with effects. There is a new spaciousness, announced at the start by the ambient sounds of Dakar street-life. At the microphone, Mbene Diatta Seck revels in this new openness: mbalax diva, she feelingly turns each of the four songs into a discrete dramatic episode, using different sets of rhetorical techniques. The music throughout is taut, grooving, complex, like before; but more volatile, intuitive and reaching, with turbulent emotional and spiritual expressivity. Learn More -

MADISON WILLING - Birth EP (remixes)
£15.98This five-track remix collection weaves together deep bass-driven soundscapes with intricate, emotive detail. The opening track, 'Patient,' merges euphoric melodies with a stunning fusion of bass music and orchestral beauty. Next, Ehua's remix of 'Hold Me A Bit Longer' brings a burst of energy with broken beats, jittery keyboard edits, and a fragmented rhythm that's impossible to ignore. Sinistarr's take on 'Divinity' offers a lush, atmospheric journey, filled with ambient textures that captivate the listener. On Side 2, Synkro, an R&S favourite, reimagines 'Birth' as a downtempo piece, balancing deep bass growls with ethereal vocals and delicate piano flourishes. Finally, the collection closes with Itoa’s remix of 'Prayer,' which builds a slow, hypnotic groove, blending techno elements with inventive twists for a truly captivating sonic experience. MION aka EDIT SELECT - Theme: Remastered & Remixed
£14.99'Theme' is a 1999 techno classic from Mion aka Edit Select that was originally released on Music Man. 26 years on, it still sounds future and chimes with the deep tech sound of now, so has been remastered and offered up alongside new remixes from Vil, Earwax and Deniro. The original is a textured, loose and chunky techno stomper with fuzzy pads and imperfect edges. Vil's version has wispy synths and static electricity fizzing around a deep mid-tempo groove and cavernous sub bass. Earwax brings a widescreen serenity and supple depth, and Deniro ups the melodic quota with shimmering synth modulations. Learn More -
MILLSART - Star Child EP
£17.99Millsart is an alias of Jeff Mills which the Detroit tech pioneer and cosmic ambient maestro uses to explore some of his most melodic sounds. 'Theme From Star Child' is a lush soundscape with rich piano chords and glowing synths all over a mid-tempo beat that is perfectly inviting. 'Satori' is more percussive with loopy drums and scintillating hi-hats dancing over the beats. 'Love Warrior' is a broken beat trip with orchestral melodies and sustained chords that all glow like distant stars. Last but not least is the jazz-dancer 'Starlight Trance Dancer' with its rippling keys bringing future soul to the supple rhythms. Learn More -

CHUNKY / STICKY DUB / GILES SMITH / ALEX NUT - Eglo Records Volume 3 EP
£13.49Massive jazzdance and UK bass fusions on the new e-glowup from Eglo (though the record is also released physically). Celebrating 15 years of the nominal "post-dubstep" label, this limited 12" EP hears four exclusive, unreleased tracks from an upcoming label-definer compilation, the third in a series. Born from the basement of Plastic People, the pressure has remained continuously on Eglo to keep the same foment of bass musical innovation that the club nurtured alive. Plastic People is a routinised object of nostalgia, and it is often deemed the last proper place for innovation in bass music before austerity Britain militated against it. Zed Bias's remix of Chunky's 'Dancing On Tables' with Metrodome - and the deep, bruk-inspired track, 'Minerals,' from Liverpool's rising star Sticky Dub - both prove this assessment totally wrong. Genius thrives. On the flip, we've also house legend Giles Smith (formerly of Secretsundaze) delivering fresh material, as well as label boss Alexander Nut making his official debut with the lo-fi electro house track 'Arcade Fun Pt. 1.' The full compilation, featuring artists like Shy One, Steve Spacek, and Fatima, drops in April. Learn More
