To celebrate 30 years since the launch of his now-iconic Environ label, Morgan Geist is revisiting where it all began—reissuing the long out-of-print debut 12", a solo EP that marked just his second release. At this early stage, Geist had yet to fully embrace the disco-infused, synth-rich sound he’s now synonymous with. Instead, the record finds him exploring the celestial edges of Detroit-inspired techno and jacking, spacey house. Leading the EP is Sands, a subtly bleep-inflected techno cut that showcases Geist’s emerging finesse. Airpour follows with a more urgent, upbeat groove—raw, jacking, and irresistibly propulsive. On the flip, Smear dives into deeper territory, built on layered percussion and lush, immersive textures that reveal Geist's techno leanings in full. Closing out the release is a cosmic reinterpretation of Smear from The Connection Machine—a then-duo fresh off a stellar Planet E release—who deliver a slowed-down, ambient techno rework that’s as hypnotic as it is expansive.
