Khadim is a stunning reconfiguration of the Ndagga Rhythm Force sound. The instrumentation is radically pared down. The guitar is gone; the concatenation of sabars; the drum-kit. Each of the four tracks hones in on just one or two drummers; otherwise the sole recorded element is the singing; everything else is programmed. Synths are dialogically locked into the drumming. Tellingly, Ernestus has reached for his beloved Prophet-5, a signature go-to since Basic Channel days, thirty years ago. Texturally, the sound is more dubwise; prickling with effects. There is a new spaciousness, announced at the start by the ambient sounds of Dakar street-life. At the microphone, Mbene Diatta Seck revels in this new openness: mbalax diva, she feelingly turns each of the four songs into a discrete dramatic episode, using different sets of rhetorical techniques. His first release dates back to 2001, when Theo Parrish released a track he'd recorded in 1987, and since then, Carson has made intermittent appearances on Parrish's Sound Signature label. His latest 12" release for Theo's label is a true standout! "Lemonline" is a smooth, breezy gem, where Carson's jazzy piano melodies effortlessly blend with vibrant, Latin-inspired rhythms. On the flipside, "Sofnthik" transports listeners to an undiscovered 1980s Chicago deep house vibe, with warm, soulful chords swirling around a choppy drum machine groove. In the last few weeks of October 2022, Scrimshire wrote a new collection of songs with the descriptive working title "Scream". A direct response to the absurdity of the breakdown in the UK government, the horror of the treatment of refugees arriving on our shores and the callous disregard for the trauma being caused to low income people or anyone considered "other". While self-preserving Conservative MPs fought for their jobs, record profits were announced by energy companies as crippling amounts of money were gouged from people's pockets. Purity was written in 2021 and was one of a few tracks I had completed, but remained unreleased. In 2022 I played a show for Dissonance in Bristol, and consequently played Purity, to which George (Artificial Red) contacted me the following day about this particular track I played, and I told him it was a piece called Purity. He really liked it and asked if he could remix it, and I agreed. Not long after he sent over the remix which I liked, but at that point I wasn't too sure where we could release them, so they remained unreleased for a time. In the latter part of 2023 we both played a show together and he played the remix, which caught my attention as I hadn't heard it in a while, and that was my first time hearing it on bigger speakers and I thought it sounded great! While nowhere near his most celebrated work, 'I Need You' is undoubtedly one of sadly departed San Francisco disco star Sylvester's most potent dancefloor workouts - a typically driving mood-enhancing cover that transformed a gospel song into a soaring, surging, tops-off hymn to sexual desire. This reissue pairs the Harvey Fuqua-produced original 12" version (1980) with what appears to be a previously unreleased re-edit by Chicago house originator Ron Hardy. The latter's take is more rhythmically sturdy and lightly percussive, with vocal and full instrumental sections (often drenched in effects) sitting side by side with extended drum workouts. It's a fine alternative take of a disco record that should be in everyone's record collection. Learn More

Named in reference to the dance as opposed to the breakneck offshoot of Ghetto House, "Footwork" is a sublime slab of Theo with many of his trademark production touches. The American female vocal trio First Choice released their rendition of 'Love and Happiness' in 1973. The track is a cover of Al Green's original released just a year earlier in 1972, but First Choice's version was perhaps helped along the way by a peak case of nominative determinism: for us, theirs is the first choice. Featured on their debut album, Armed and Extremely Dangerous, it stood out on the Philly soul girl gang's record as one of the records most propitious to sampling by house and techno musicians, such as Todd Terry and Jungle Brothers. But this time, the legacy of this preceptive soulful-house interplay is honoured by a newly reissued remix by the mysterious but titanic Chicago producer Ron Hardy, whose inclusion on the record is the real star here. Hardy's signature reel-to-reel fuzzes and presence-bled hues effect recollections of a pre-DAW production setup, and the resonances of dub (woodblocks, four-tone hooks, burly basslines) nest the original Al Green vocal nicely. pianist/composer Aidan Shepherd and drummer Tim Carnegie - were invited to Mykonos as part of a collaboration between Maera Music and 22a, which allowed the band to spend a few days writing and recording some new music. It was an opportunity for the quartet to spend some time together in a secluded hillside villa without any distractions and ultimately kick start the writing process for a long overdue album. DMF is proud to present the K-llab series, a new collaboration project where label head Kerrie partners with some of her favourite artists. The debut release in the series features an original track and a remix by each artist, offering a fresh take on both the sounds and creative processes of each collaboration. K-llab-01 sees Kerrie teaming up with Italian duo Dynamic Forces, known for their heavy, old school leaning, industrial-influenced techno. Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish does a fine job of keeping the majority of his vast back catalogue available to buy for all. It's a tough job, too, cause most of it sells out in a quick fashion, so he has to be on the ball with reissues. A couple are landing this month and 'You Forgot' is one of them. It was his label's 15th release way back in 2001 and for many, b-side cut 'Dirt Rhodes' is one of Parrish's best and most definite tracks. The grinding mechanical grooves that lock you into a hypnotic state are overlaid with perfectly knackered-sounding Rhodes chords and it makes for a magical listen. 'You Forgot' with its soulful vocal musings and perfunctory drum sounds is not bad either. Learn More

Melodies Record Club will find each curated by a different guest DJ or producer with the first one selected by the always on point Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet. Detroit innovator and singular soundsmith Theo Parrish returns with a new EP which we're told is his response to "stagnation and nonmovement" either physiologically, mentally or physically. 'Positive Mental Attitude Solves All' is up first and is a tribute to the late great funk-father Amp Fiddler. It's a typically deep cut with dusty drums and irregular, scruffy percussive lines layered in next to diffuse synth warmth and soulful melodies. Encore has been remastered from the original tapes and features 11 compositions by Arthur Verocai who was joined by the legendary Azymuth, Ivan Lins and a nine-piece string section. The album was a long-awaited follow-up to his 1972 debut so bridges 35 years and bottles up Brazilian influences with American soul and cinematic experimentation. Initially overlooked amongst his wider canon, Verocai's debut gained cult status thanks to Far Out Recordings' Joe Davis who rediscovered it in the late 80s. In 2004, producer Dave Brinkworth brought Verocai back to the studio to reignite his musical brilliance. A master arranger, Verocai's work with Brazilian legends shaped his visionary sound and have helped to cement him as a timeless force in music history. Learn More
