Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish does a fine job of keeping the majority of his vast back catalogue available to buy for all. It's a tough job, too, cause most of it sells out in a quick fashion, so he has to be on the ball with reissues. A couple are landing this month and 'You Forgot' is one of them. It was his label's 15th release way back in 2001 and for many, b-side cut 'Dirt Rhodes' is one of Parrish's best and most definite tracks. The grinding mechanical grooves that lock you into a hypnotic state are overlaid with perfectly knackered-sounding Rhodes chords and it makes for a magical listen. 'You Forgot' with its soulful vocal musings and perfunctory drum sounds is not bad either. Learn More

His first release dates back to 2001, when Theo Parrish released a track he'd recorded in 1987, and since then, Carson has made intermittent appearances on Parrish's Sound Signature label. His latest 12" release for Theo's label is a true standout! "Lemonline" is a smooth, breezy gem, where Carson's jazzy piano melodies effortlessly blend with vibrant, Latin-inspired rhythms. On the flipside, "Sofnthik" transports listeners to an undiscovered 1980s Chicago deep house vibe, with warm, soulful chords swirling around a choppy drum machine groove. Atonement was one of those rare tracks where inspiration struck naturally. After a long day of corporate nonsense, I sat down in the evening to watch a certain series with my wife when the scene sampled in the intro came on. I wasn't planning to make music that night, but the mood and tension of that scene really resonated with me. I knew I had to sample it and exactly what kind of vibe the track needed. I went straight to the studio, and by the early hours, the bare bones of the track were done. Over the following weeks, I worked on developing it, but ultimately, I stripped it back to how it sounded in that first session: simple, powerful drums paired with a filthy, hypnotic bass groove. Le Stim's 1980 disco-funk tribute to "the king of the fighters" is not one of the better-known examples, but it's certainly one of the most scintillating. Here, the sought-after gem - all rousing horns, Clavinet-heavy grooves, spacey synths and starry-eyed vocals - is given the reissue treatment by Melodies International. The American female vocal trio First Choice released their rendition of 'Love and Happiness' in 1973. The track is a cover of Al Green's original released just a year earlier in 1972, but First Choice's version was perhaps helped along the way by a peak case of nominative determinism: for us, theirs is the first choice. Featured on their debut album, Armed and Extremely Dangerous, it stood out on the Philly soul girl gang's record as one of the records most propitious to sampling by house and techno musicians, such as Todd Terry and Jungle Brothers. But this time, the legacy of this preceptive soulful-house interplay is honoured by a newly reissued remix by the mysterious but titanic Chicago producer Ron Hardy, whose inclusion on the record is the real star here. Hardy's signature reel-to-reel fuzzes and presence-bled hues effect recollections of a pre-DAW production setup, and the resonances of dub (woodblocks, four-tone hooks, burly basslines) nest the original Al Green vocal nicely. Wild post-d&b from Cardiff music producer Quartz, whose music speaks for itself: in Elliot Garvey, we find an artist rightly hesitant to involve himself in the gaudy blare of online releasing. What is lost in the way of covetous imitativeness, which goes all too commonly with the territory of attempting to maintain an online presence, is made up for with a raw, unversed and entirely original sound, which builds on the tempos and harshnesses of drum & bass while otherwise upending its banalities. 'Russian Roulette' and 'Lucid' hardly care to qualify as d&b tracks proper, more than they do to simply compel the raver to shake uncontrollably, with their gatling percs and no-man's textures. 'Do It', meanwhile, contrasts the A-side's intuit-iators with an intelligent chopper-upper, working rattling and languid voices around a mercenary mix.
